Biddy Mason was born a slave in 1818 in Mississippi. Biddy was owned by Robert and Rebecca Smith. The Smith’s moved to California taking Biddy and her girls along.. This was a mistake for Robert Smith and a blessing for Biddy Mason.

FACTS ABOUT BIDDY

- Biddy Mason was born a slave in Mississippi.

 - It took seven months to travel from Mississippi to Utah.

- Her daughters names were Ellen, Harriett and Ann. 

- Her sister Hannah, also traveled with her.

- Biddy made the entire trip on foot.

- Judge Benjamin Hayes presided over Biddy’s "Freedom" case.

- Biddy became a practical nurse after she gained her freedom.

- Biddy was buried in an unmarked grave at Evergreen Cemetery in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles.

- In 1988, a tombstone was unveiled to mark her grave for the first time.
